„IMAGINE PEACE“ WORKSHOP SERIES - Fall 2008.
Located in the field of design research, social change and cultural policies, the core goal of the project «Seeing Peace» is the production of the first visual and critical encyclopedia of anti-war and anti-conflict depictions. An unparalleled anthology of over 2,000 images, icons and illustrations of peace dating back to as early as the bible up to present-day times has been assembled by an international team of designers and theorists at our institute already. Additionally, based on a list of 300 key words, the second call to an equal number of acclaimed authors from all kinds of disciplines from around the world has gone out; these people write critical statements regarding the image they chose, or they interpret an additional depiction they provide themselves.
The material collected for the publication entails what one could call ‘yesteryear’ images of peace. The workshop series aim at creating a more ‘drawn-from-life’ iconography far beyond the canon of ideologically restricted, religious, or propaganda material, or the socially constructed western visuality of peace. The workshop-series are an interdisciplinary investment on-site knowledge production in geographical areas of social or political conflict. An intercultural dialogue between the cities/regions where they will take place; at cultural centre, universities, or art institutes. The analysis of the current image collection of peace is the first step to foster the creation of new visions or visualizations of non-violence and non-conflicts. ».
